We, Union of The Workers in South Africa representatives, firmly commit ourselves to a unified and formation of a strong, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist organisation, and a democratic South Africa, free from oppression, economic exploitation and unfair discrimination.
To represent, protect and improve the working conditions of members across South Africa.
Union of the Workers in South Africa (UWISA)
To become a powerful, legally recognized force that defends and uplifts all security and retail workers in South Africa - ensuring no worker stands alone in the face of injustice, whether in the guardhouse or behind the till.
To protect, empower, and advance the rights of workers in the security and retail industries by ensuring fair working conditions, legal representation, and collective bargaining power that truly reflects the voices of both sectors.
To unite and uplift security and retail workers in South Africa by providing strong representation, legal protection, skill development, and collective bargaining power to ensure fair treatment, job security, and dignity in the workplace.
ABOUT US
The Union of Workers in the Security & Retail Industry of South Africa (UWISA) is a united voice for workers in two of the country's most vital sectors - security and retail. We fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for the dignity of every worker, whether you are protecting property or serving customers on the shop floor.
Whether you're guarding the gates or working the tills, UWISA is committed to fighting for your rights, your future, and your dignity. Together, we are stronger - and together, we will win.
OUR VALUES
They prioritize giving both security and retail workers the tools, knowledge, and representation needed to protect their rights.
By uniting security and retail sectors—two traditionally separate labor groups—UWISA reinforces that all workers deserve fair treatment, regardless of their role.
“Together we are stronger” isn’t just a slogan; it's a value. UWISA fosters community and collective strength among members.
Whether through legal support or collective bargaining, they fight for fairness in wages, treatment, and workplace conditions.
The emphasis on structured membership requirements, open communication, and advocacy suggests a commitment to honest and ethical operations.
One of their key missions is ensuring members are safe at work, highlighting their respect for human dignity and well-being.
Training, workshops, and skills-building show a dedication to helping members grow professionally and personally.

Why We Include Retail Workers
The retail industry employs hundreds of thousands of South Africans, yet retail workers often face low wages, unpredictable schedules, unsafe environments, and unfair dismissals. UWISA recognizes that retail workers are as essential to our economy as security officers, and their struggles deserve equal representation. We already have over 30 members from major retailers like Shoprite, and we are expanding to include more workers from supermarkets, clothing stores, warehouses, and supply chains. When retail workers join forces with security workers, our bargaining power multiplies, giving us greater leverage to demand fair pay, job security, and dignity for all members.
